Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the University City Division

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 8900 block of Avebury Drive in the University City Division.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, March 7, 2023) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have identified two suspects involved in this case and obtained warrants for their arrest.

 

During the afternoon hours of Monday, March 6, 2023, members of the CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located and arrested, Zion Brown (DOB: 06/20/2001) and Kenneth Cathcart (DOB: 07/29/1997). Both suspects were transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown to speak with homicide detectives. At the conclusion of the interviews, both suspects were transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. Mr. Brown was charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.  Mr. Cathcart was charged with Felony Accessory After the Fact to Murder.

 

The victim's next of kin has been notified of the arrests.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, August 5, 2022) – The victim in this case has been identified as Ontario Shukur Redfern (DOB 06/28/1997).  The victim's next of kin has been notified of his death.

Homicide Investigation in the University City Division

 

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, August 5, 2022) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 8900 block of Avebury Drive in the University City Division.

 

On Friday, August 5, shortly before 2:00 a.m., officers responded to a call for shots fired in the 8900 block of Avebury Drive.  Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with a gunshot wound. Medic responded and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

 

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD's Operations Command, Victim Services, CFD, Medic and the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team also assisted.
