Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation near the 10000 block of Hillgrove Lane in the Steele Creek Division.

As a result of the continued investigation, detectives signed an arrest warrant for 1st Degree Murder for Michael Anthony Cornwell Jr. (DOB 06/15/1995).

 

On September 13, 2022, Cornwell Jr. was arrested by Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) detectives and transported to the Law Enforcement Center (601 E. Trade St.) to be interviewed by homicide detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Cornwell Jr. was transported to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with 1st Degree Murder. The family of the victim, James Freiburg, was notified of the arrest.

Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Steele Creek Division 


Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, March 7, 2022) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Steele Creek Division are requesting the public's assistance in a homicide investigation.

On March 5, around 3 a.m., officers were alerted to gunshots via several 911 calls for service near the 10000 block of Hillgrove Lane in the Steele Creek Division. Officers responded to the scene and found shell casings in the parking lot as well as the victim, James Freiburg (DOB: 04/22/1973), inside his apartment suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic.

An investigation determined Mr. Freiburg was struck by a stray bullet that stemmed from a large shootout in the parking lot between two groups of people unrelated to Mr. Freiburg.

Homicide Detectives have reason to believe the suspect's car is a dark grey or black dodge Charger/Challenger. The vehicle will have extensive front-end damage including the right front headlight out and possibly several bullet holes. The vehicle was seen heading on Highway 160 towards I-485. Photographs of the suspect's actual vehicle are included in this release.

                                   Homicide Investigation in the Steele Creek Division 


Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, March 5, 2022) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation near the 10000 block of Hillgrove Lane in the Steele Creek Division.

Around 3:30 a.m., officers heard shots fired in the area and police responded. When they arrived, they located several casings in the parking lot and a male who was suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced deceased inside an apartment on scene by Medic.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Investigators responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, CMPD's Operations Command, CFD, and Medic also assisted.
