Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, January 26, 2023) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit identified, Earl Marcelius Likely (DOB: 05/26/1977), as a suspect in this case and obtained warrants for his arrest.
On Wednesday, January 25, 2023, with the assistance of CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT), the suspect turned himself into detectives at the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown. Mr. Likely was interviewed by homicide detectives. Following his interview, he was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with the following:
- Murder (1 count)
- Attempted Murder (1 count)
The victim's next of kin has been notified of this arrest.

Homicide Investigation in the North Tryon Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, January 24, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 500 block of West Sugar Creek Road in the North Tryon Division.
On Tuesday, January 24, shortly before 10:30 p.m., officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service in the 500 block of West Sugar Creek Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with a gunshot wound. Medic pronounced the victim deceased on scene.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD's Operations Command, Victim Services, CFD, Medic and the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team also assisted.
