Case Update: Fatal Vehicle Collision in the Metro Division

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Metro Division.

After continued investigation, Morris Vanba Massalay, the operator of the Ford, has been charged with Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Collision.

 

This is an ongoing, active investigation. Fatal Vehicle Collision in the Metro Division

 

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, August 10, 2022) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Metro Division.

 

On Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at 11:11 a.m., Metro Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the 2300 block of Freedom Drive.  Upon arrival, officers located a 2020 Honda Monkey motorcycle and its operator Patrick Carlos Ramia (DOB 04/12/1941), and a 2011 Ford Super Duty pickup, and its driver Morris Vanba Massalay (DOB 03/15/1954).  MEDIC arrived on scene and pronounced Ramia deceased as a result of his injuries sustained in the crash.  The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search were contacted to conduct an investigation.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Ramia was operating the Honda and traveling east on Freedom Drive in the center lane. Massalay was driving the Ford and traveling east on Freedom Drive in the left lane.  The Honda merged left in front of the Ford, and the front of the Ford struck the rear of the Honda. Ramia fell off the Honda and was struck again by the Ford. The Honda veered to the right and slid to a stop.

Speed and impairment are not suspected for either party. There are no charges at this time. Next of kin has been notified of the victim's death.
