Case Update: Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigation in the Metro Division

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle vs pedestrian crash in the Metro Division.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, January 11, 2023) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit have charged the driver, Jaren Watson, in connection to this investigation.

 

Detectives have determined that Ms. Watson was operating her mobile phone when she struck the victim, Jesse Sigler, on Brookshire Boulevard on Sunday, November 27, 2022.  It is also determined that Ms. Watson failed to remain at the scene of the crash until emergency assistance could locate her and the victim.

 

On Tuesday, January 10, 2023, detectives with the CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit arrested and charged Ms. Watson with the following:

 

  • Felony Hit and Run Resulting in Death
  • Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle
  • Texting and Driving

 

Ms. Watson was interviewed by detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit at the CMPD Freedom Division Office.  Following the interview, she was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

 

The victim's next of kin has been notified of the arrest.

Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigation in the Metro Division

 

 

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, November 30, 2022) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle vs pedestrian crash in the Metro Division.

 

On Monday, November 28th, 2022, at approximately 7:10 a.m., Metro Division officers responded to a pedestrian lying in the median in the 2700 block of the W. Brookshire Freeway. Upon arrival, officers located a male lying in the grassy median near the cable divider. Medic responded and pronounced the pedestrian deceased on scene.

 

CMPD Major Crash detectives, Motor Unit officers, Crime Scene investigators, and the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office arrived to conduct their investigation.

 

The initial investigation indicates that on Sunday, November 27th, 2022, at around 10:30 p.m., the pedestrian, Jesse Sigler, was walking along the left shoulder of the road when he was struck by a 2021 Honda C-HR, operated by Jaren Watson (DOB: 10/08/1992). Ms. Watson indicated she could not locate anything or anyone in the area following the impact and then drove home. Ms. Watson then contacted 911 to report the crash. North Carolina State Highway Patrol and CMPD then responded to conduct the investigation. CMPD officers and a NCSHP officer canvassed the Brookshire Freeway and could not locate any persons or objects that appeared struck. The following morning, as daylight was breaking, a motorist noticed the victim lying in the median and called 911.

 

It is unknown if impairment is a factor for the pedestrian, but it is suspected. It is unknown if impairment and speed are factors for Ms. Watson, but detectives are analyzing all evidence.

 

Next of kin for Mr. Sigler has been notified.
