Saturday, September 15, 2018

On Friday, September 14, 2018, at approximately 4:50 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers responded to a 911 call about an assault at a motel at 5115 Reagan Drive. When they arrived, witnesses told them the victim, a 17 year old female, had been assaulted and kidnapped by an adult male. Before officers arrived, the victim and the suspect had left the motel.

At approximately 5:38 p.m., officers responded to the Captain D's at 123 Eastway Drive in response to a 911 call stating that a female was inside the restaurant and had been kidnapped.  When the officers arrived, they located the victim, whose name will not be released, and the suspect, Patrick McManus, DOB: 2/10/1993.  McManus was arrested on scene.

CMPD Human Trafficking Unit detectives were called in to investigate. Their investigation has revealed the following information:

The 17-year-old victim has known the suspect for less than one week. After a few days the suspect indicated to the victim that she had to work as a prostitute to earn him money. When she refused she was periodically threatened and assaulted by the suspect.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. McManus has since been charged with Kidnapping, Human Trafficking, Assault on a Female, Assault by Strangulation, Assault on a Government Official, Damage To Property, two counts of Malicious Conduct by a Prisoner, Resist / Obstruct / Delay, and Promoting Prostitution.

After being interviewed, McManus was being transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail when he was able to maneuver his handcuffed hands to the front of his body and assault the officer driving. Additional officers responded and were attempting to secure him again when he spit on two of them and kicked the patrol car door, damaging it. McManus was quickly restrained and officers were once again able to handcuff him behind his back and apply other restraining methods.

During the above incident, McManus received minor injuries while being restrained and was transported to Novant Health for evaluation. Once released, he was transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
