On Wednesday February 17, 2016, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and four Quick Trip Convenience Stores are partnering together to prevent auto thefts.

The CMPD has seen a rise in auto thefts where keys have been left in unattended vehicles throughout Charlotte. In the last three months (11/9/2015 – 2/8/2016), there have been 85 vehicles stolen with ‘keys left in the ignition’. This is a 67% increase from the 51 thefts that occurred last winter during the same time period.

These crimes have been occurring in private driveways and in public areas due to people leaving their keys in the ignition and vehicles unattended to warm them up during the cold weather. To educate the public about this issue, CMPD Officers and Detectives will be at four Quick Trip locations on Wednesday, February 17th to reward drivers who show officers their keys. Drivers who show their keys to officers will receive drink coupons for free drinks provided by Quick Trip. Officers will also be covering other Crime Prevention topics and handing out literature to drivers.

The Quick Trips locations are listed below, along with the CMPD Divisions in which they are located. Officers will be at these locations between 6:30 – 9:00 a.m. The CMPD would like to thank the Quick Trip for partnering with us to prevent the next crime.
