Today, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) released body-worn camera (BWC) video of an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Aug. 19, 2022. Based on the wording of the request, only the body-worn camera footage of South Division Officer Brandon Graham is being released after a media member petitioned the courts.
The subject who died, Ms. Brenda Donahue, was being served an involuntary commitment order by Officers Brandon Graham, Lauren Ehlke, and Kristian Kurtzke, when she fired several shots at officers, striking Officer Ehlke in the chest. The bullet lodged in Ehlke's body-worn camera, and she was not injured in the shooting. South Division Officer Brandon Graham returned fire striking Ms. Donahue. Officers performed life-saving measures including CPR until paramedics arrived. Ms. Donahue was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (NCSBI) is handling the officer-involved shooting investigation.

Case Update: Officer Involved Shooting in the South Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, August 29, 2022) – The suspect who fired shots at officers before being struck by return gunfire has been identified as Brenda Donahue (DOB 10/10/1961). Donahue died as a result of her injuries on August 25, 2022. Her next of kin has been notified of her death.
The officer involved in this shooting is Officer Brandon Graham of the South Division. Officer Graham has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard policy in any officer-involved shooting.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. Any additional questions should be directed to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (SBI). CMPD is not releasing any further information regarding this case at this time. The incident report number is 20220819-1626-00.
Officer Involved Shooting in the South Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, August 19, 2022) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are investigating an officer-involved shooting investigation in the 8900 block of St. Croix Lane in the South Division.
On Friday, August 19, shortly after 5:30 p.m., officers were attempting to serve an involuntary commitment order. Upon arrival, a male at the residence opened the door and greeted the officers. Officers called out to the female who was inside the residence. The female responded with gunfire toward three CMPD officers and one officer was shot in the chest. The officer's protective equipment stopped the bullet.
One officer returned gunfire and struck the female. CMPD officers immediately began rendering aid. The female was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The three responding officers were transported to a nearby hospital for observation. A firearm was recovered from the scene.
Homicide Unit detectives and the State Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. CMPD's Operations Command, Community Policing Crisis Response Team, Victim Services, Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Medic, and CFD also responded to assist.
As is standard procedure with any officer-involved shooting, the Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
