Armed Robbery Unit investigating a string of robberies

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Armed Robbery Unit are investigating several armed robberies that occurred early this morning.   

  • On Thursday, October 25, 2018, at 3:03 a.m., Central Division officers responded to the 600 block of E. 8th Street in reference to an armed robbery from person call for service.  The victim stated that two unknown armed suspects demanded his vehicle.  The suspects fled the scene in the stolen 2004 Lexus SUV.
  • At 3:44 a.m., Providence Division officers responded to the 7-Eleven, located at 5343 Monroe Road, in reference to an armed robbery from business. The clerk stated that an unknown suspect entered the store and brandished a weapon demanding property from the victim business. Upon receiving the property the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle that was being driven by a second unknown suspect.
  • At 4:05 a.m., Independence Division officers responded to the Circle K, located at 9100 Monroe Road. The clerk told responding officers that a suspect entered the store and robbed him at gunpoint.  After obtaining the property the suspect left the scene in a vehicle. 

During the investigations, officers determined that the two suspects from the Central Division robbery were responsible for the 7-Eleven and Circle K robberies. Armed Robbery Unit detectives were notified and began their investigation. Detectives received additional information that the suspects also robbed a 7-Eleven on W. John Street in Matthews, NC. 

At approximately 5:00 a.m., Armed Robbery Unit detectives were notified that the stolen Lexus SUV was involved in a motor vehicle collision in Lancaster, South Carolina. The occupants of the vehicle matched the description of the armed robbery suspects. The driver of the SUV was pronounced deceased on scene and the passenger, who was later identified as Daniel Hughes, was transported to a medical facility for treatment of the injuries he sustained in the crash.  Armed Robbery detectives will be obtaining warrants for the arrest of Daniel Hughes.  For information related to the fatal motor vehicle collision please contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
