Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Armed Robbery Unit have charged Kyle Kornegay for two bank robberies that occurred on 7/23/2018.
On 7/23/2018 at approximately 10:13 a.m., a male suspect entered the State Employees Credit Union located at 8605 University City Blvd and handed an employee a note demanding money. The teller complied and the suspect exited the business with the stolen money. The CMPD report number for this incident is 20180723-1013-02.
On 7/23/2018 at approximately 2:45 p.m., the same male suspect entered the Bank of America located at 2249 Beatties Ford Road and once again passed a note to a teller, demanding that she give him money. The teller called another employee over to her, at which point the suspect fled the business without obtaining any property. The CMPD report number for this incident is 20180723-1445-00.
Detectives with the CMPD Armed Robbery Unit along with Agents from the FBI responded to both scenes to conduct the investigations.
A short time after the Bank of America attempted robbery occurred, a Metro Division patrol officer located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Both occupants inside of the car were detained without incident. The passenger, Kyle Kornegay DOB: 11/30/1987, was identified as the suspect in both of the Bank Robberies. He has been charged with Attempted Common Law Robbery for the Bank of America case and Common Law Robbery for the incident that occurred at the State Employees Credit Union. During the course of the investigation it was determined that the driver of the vehicle was not involved in either robbery, however, he was arrested for having an unrelated warrant for larceny.
