Leaves are changing, so is city’s tree ordinance

Trees in Charlotte

Residents can learn more about proposed changes to Charlotte's Tree Ordinance for urban sites and provide input on how trees should be incorporated into Charlotte's future growth at an informational drop-in meeting, Oct. 10 from 5-7 p.m., Room 267 at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 East 4th Street.

Proposed changes to the Tree Ordinance are limited in scope and focused entirely on urban-zoned sites.

While an effective tool, the application of the Tree Ordinance standards to urban development can be challenging.

Proposed changes to the Tree Ordinance will:

  • Provide greater transparency and predictability by formalizing the flexible administration of the current Tree Ordinance

  • Better integrate trees into urban sites so people can interact with them

  • Result in no net loss of ordinance-required trees. This is a guiding principle in the proposed changes
