This month's Fast Five series features Aviation Director Haley Gentry. She leads nearly 700 employees while overseeing one of the world's top 10 busiest airports.
Which part of the organization do you lead?
The
Aviation Department which manages the day-to-day operations of Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Why did you decide to work for the City of Charlotte?
I needed an internship to complete my college degree at Appalachian State University and had a great opportunity to do that at the airport. I quickly found that this was where I wanted to be and took a full-time job in airport operations. That's been over 30 years ago, and I've been able to work in almost every area at the airport.
What is the biggest organizational priority you're working on right now?
The past two and a half years have changed our workplaces and how we conduct business. Our employees are our most valuable resource and are essential to providing the services that make the airport functional. Maintaining the staff we have and identifying future employees is a top priority. We're very focused on expanding our workforce development programs such as our apprenticeships, creating employment pipelines and fostering our educational partnerships. It is important we are competitive and forward thinking when it comes to our workforce.
What is your favorite part about working for the City of Charlotte?
Being part of something that is so much bigger than one person, really speaks to me. It is a great privilege to be part of a thriving team.
What is your favorite restaurant in Charlotte?
Monty's Café. I love brunch!
