Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 16, 2023) – The City of Charlotte Planning, Design & Development Department announced a community area planning process as the next step in implementing the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan. Area planning is a process to make recommendations for land development, transportation and infrastructure improvements, and amenities and services that support the vision for a community.
"Community Area Plans are the next step in planning the future of individual Charlotte communities," said Alyson Craig, interim planning director for the city. "These plans preserve, enhance and celebrate communities by providing more detailed strategies and actions for growth and development for specific areas."
Community Area Planning Process
The city will work collaboratively with residents during the next two years to develop draft plans for
14 geographic areas that together span all of Charlotte.

Residents may use the city's
interactive map to find the location of a specific address within the 14 geographic areas.
City seeks resident input and engagement
City staff will host several in-person and virtual workshops for each of the 14 geographic areas so residents can provide input on how their community develops and their future area plan.
Residents will also learn about newly approved zoning districts that will support community area plan implementation, and how future zoning changes may be proposed to better align with the community's vision.
