Duke Energy Executive Joins City of Charlotte to Lead COVID-19 Recovery and Resiliency Efforts

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The City of Charlotte announced today that Shawn Heath will be joining the city’s team as a Special Assistant to the City Manager with responsibility to align and manage the city’s COVID-19 recovery and resiliency. Shawn will work closely with the city’s senior leadership team to ensure the city’s programs are supporting Charlotte’s residents and businesses.

“The coronavirus has a had a profound impact on our city and our efforts to help Charlotte survive the pandemic and thrive during the recovery is a critical function for all of us,” City Manager Marcus D. Jones said. “This is an incredibly dynamic situation and I wanted to make sure that we were doing all we can to help and support our residents and businesses. Shawn’s experience and demonstrated commitment to Charlotte will help ensure we are doing that.”

Shawn previously spent 18 years with Duke Energy including his most recent role as the President of the Duke Energy Foundation and the Chief of Staff for the Duke Energy CEO. Shawn’s career with Duke also included serving as Duke Energy’s chief sustainability officer, where he led the company’s sustainability-related goal setting, reporting, internal programs and stakeholder outreach. He also served as vice president of corporate community affairs, and director of state energy policy for the Carolinas.

“Serving the Charlotte community professionally and personally has been very important to me since I moved to Charlotte more than two decades ago,” Heath said. “Like everybody in Charlotte, I have been deeply impacted by COVID-19 and saw this as a tremendous opportunity to serve the residents of Charlotte in this critical time.”

In addition to working with the community in his professional roles, Shawn also serves on the boards of directors of Child care Resources Inc., the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Foundation, and Sustain Charlotte. He previously served on the boards of Read Charlotte, Project LIFT, and the Central Piedmont Community College Foundation.

Prior to Duke Energy, Shawn worked for Arthur Andersen for five years where he provided both audit and management consulting services. Shawn holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Virginia Tech and earned an Masters in Business Administration from Yale.
