CFD Explorers Program

Learn what it takes to be a Charlotte firefighter. Young men and women ages 14 to 20 are invited to join CFD Explorers and get exclusive access to real-world firefighting experiences.

“It’s a great way to engage in firefighting activities and learn the culture,” says Chief Johnson. “If what they experience in the Explorers Program inspires them to go further, we encourage them to pursue a firefighting career.”

More than 700 young adults have gone through the Explorers program and more than a dozen former Explorers currently work at the Charlotte Fire Department.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for any teenager looking to see what the Charlotte Fire Department is all about,” says Jack Carriker, a current Explorer, Post 244. “This is not only a learning experience, but a place to meet other future firefighters and friends. This experience that I have had here is one I will never forget.”

Combining classroom and practical hands-on training, the Explorers program gives students knowledge about various careers in firefighting. It also seeks to instill in each Explorer member the importance of education, being a responsible citizen and striving for personal best.
