Active Survival

The course goes into more depth, but the main takeaway from the training is learning the ABCs of active survival.

"We want you to get that survival mentality. We want you to be able to say to yourself 'Even if I get shot, I am going to continue to fight for my life." – Lt. Steve Huber, CMPD

If there is an active shooter, here is what you should do:

  • Avoid: Get out! Get as far away as possible from the area where the event is happening. Run to the nearest exit and get out of the building.

  • Barricade: If you can't get away, don't just hide. Barricade yourself. Put something between you and the shooter that will make it harder for the shooter to get to you.

  • Counter: If you must, fight back! At this point you are fighting for your life. Use anything you can against the shooter. There are also ways to grab the gun.

You will learn a lot more in the course. If you have not taken the training, a public workshop is coming up on Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 6 – 8 p.m. at 11920 Verhoeff Drive, Belk Building, CJ 131, Huntersville, NC 28078.
