The Non-Emergency Police Services (NEPS), located at 601 E. Trade Street, is responsible for writing the majority of the non-emergency police reports which are requested by citizens, businesses and visitors. In order to provide a better quality of customer service, and to better utilize resources the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department does not dispatch officers on most non-emergency crimes. NEPS consists of non-sworn law enforcement professionals as well as sworn officers. They handle the majority of their workload over the telephone, but also handle all the walk-in traffic to the Police Headquarters Building, as well as managing the Online Crime Reporting service offered by the CMPD.
In partnership with 311, a citizen should call 311 in order to contact Non-Emergency Police Services. 311 will transfer the caller to NEPS if a police report is needed. 311 will also connect a caller with NEPS if they need to add something to a police report which has previously been filed.
