Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Tryon Division (The Plaza)

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, September 25, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the North Tryon Division.
On Saturday, September 23, 2023, at approximately 12:59 a.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to a single vehicle motor vehicle crash call for service in the 5000 block of The Plaza. Upon arrival, officers located a 2005 Jaguar XJ8 that had overturned and landed in a creek bed. The Charlotte Fire and MEDIC also responded to the scene. MEDIC pronounced the right front passenger, Elizabeth Adina Washington (DOB: 05/17/982), deceased on scene. The driver, Santario Demarcus Washington (DOB: 03/03/1992), was transported to Atrium Health Main with life-threatening injuries.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, CMPD Motor Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates the Jaguar was traveling at an excessive speed on The Plaza when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road, overturned and landed in a creek bed.
Excessive speed and impairment are believed to be contributing factors in this crash.
Detectives with the CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit have obtained Felony Death by Motor Vehicle and Reckless Driving warrants against Mr. Washington. The warrants will be served upon his release from the hospital.
Ms. Washington’s next of kin has been notified of her death.
