Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, November 9, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are conducting a fatal crash investigation in the North Tryon Division.
On Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at approximately 9:13 p.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to a motor vehicle collision with injuries in the 1200 block of West Sugar Creek Road. Upon arrival, officers located a 2015 Ford E350 van and a 2006 Chevrolet Astro minivan in the roadway with extensive damage. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene. MEDIC transported the driver of the Chevrolet van, Roberto Perez-Martinez (DOB: 05/23/1969), to Atrium Health Main where he was pronounced deceased.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates the Ford was travelling in the opposing travel lanes at a high rate of speed when it struck the Chevrolet van head-on. The driver of the Ford, Gregorio Aguirre Romero (DOB: 11/12/1978), was uninjured and remained on scene.
Mr. Romero was arrested and transported to the Law Enforcement Center (601 E. Trade St.) in Uptown where he was interviewed by detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Mr. Romero was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:
- Involuntary Manslaughter
- Driving Left-of-Center
- No Operators License
- Hit & Run (occurred in a separate crash prior to this incident)
Mr. Robert Perez-Martinez’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
