Collaborative Effort Leads to Arrest in Greenway Sex Assault

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, September 29, 2023) – As a result of the tireless investigative work by multiple divisions and units, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit have made an arrest in a sexual assault investigation from September 7, 2022, on McAlpine Creek Greenway.
The suspect, now identified as Khalil Boler, attacked a female victim and attempted to rape her and take her cellphone as she was walking along the greenway. The victim fought off Mr. Boler and sustained minor injuries.
On Thursday, September 28, 2023, University City Division officers arrested Khalil Boler (DOB 08/29/1995) without incident and charged him with the following:
- Attempted 2nd Degree Rape
- 2nd Degree Kidnapping
- Attempted Common Law Robbery
- Interfering with Emergency Communication
- Assault on a Female
- Sexual Battery
Boler was transported to the Law Enforcement Center (601 E. Trade Street) for an interview with Sexual Assault Unit detectives. Boler was then transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. He is currently in custody with a $116,500 bond.
Boler was first identified as a person of interest in the case following an arrest for two separate incidents that occurred at a Target at 8120 University City Boulevard. He’s charged with sexual battery and indecent exposure. The case numbers are as follows:
- Sexual Battery (20230709-1739-04)
- Indecent Exposure (20230909-1529-02)
University City Division officers investigated both cases at the Target and their detailed reports and descriptions helped Sexual Assault Unit detectives identify Mr. Boler as a suspect.
DNA analysis was conducted on evidence collected from the McAlpine Creek Greenway case, to include a familial DNA search conducted with assistance from the North Carolina State Crime Laboratory.
This case was the result of a collaborative effort from the following units:
- Sexual Assault Unit
- Cold Case Unit
- CMPD Crime Laboratory
- North Carolina State Crime Laboratory
- Independence Division
- University City Division
- Crime Scene Investigations Unit
The Independence Division spent a significant amount of time alongside the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department, conducting proactive patrols on the greenway for the past year since this initial assault. Independence Division officers also canvassed the greenway extensively for witnesses and evidence that assisted in the case.
