Assault with Deadly Weapon Investigation in the Steele Creek Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, May 22, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Steele Creek Division are conducting an assault with a deadly weapon investigation in the 8500 block of Outlets Boulevard.
On Thursday, May 18, shortly before 11:20 a.m., officers responded to a shooting on a CATS bus near the Charlotte Premium Outlet Mall. Officers located two gunshot wound victims, the driver, and a passenger of the CATS bus. The driver had non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital. The passenger had life-threatening injuries and was also transported to the hospital.
The suspect and passenger on the bus, Omarri Shariff Tobias (DOB: 07/08/2000), is charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injuries, Communicating Threats, and Carrying a Concealed Firearm. Steele Creek detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, CFD, and MEDIC also assisted.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office.
