Case Update: Shooting Investigation in the Providence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, September 20, 2023) – On Sunday, September 17, 2023, at approximately 2:17 p.m., Providence Division officers responded to an Aggravated Assault call for service in the 3500 block of Sharon Road. 

 

Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.  The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was jogging in the 3500 block of Sharon Road when he was approached by the suspect.  The suspect without warning fired a gun directly at the victim striking him in the right calf.  As the victim attempted to flee from the suspect, the suspect fired again and struck the victim in the left hand.   MEDIC arrived on scene and transported the victim to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

 

A passerby vehicle was also struck during this incident.  The occupants in the vehicle were unharmed.

 

With the assistance of CMPD’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), Providence Division officers quickly located the suspect, Stephen Damonta Montgomery (DOB: 08/06/1990), standing in the intersection of Sharon Road and Woodhaven Road.  As officers approached Mr. Montgomery to arrest him, he began to resist and a struggled ensued. Officers continued to give the suspect multiple commands to cease his resistance and the suspect failed to comply.  Mr. Montgomery also attempted to flee from officers during the struggle.  After a short time, officers were able to safely take Mr. Montgomery into custody.

 

The firearm Mr. Montgomery was found in possession of in this incident was reported stolen from Charlotte on Saturday, September 16, 2023.   The CMPD completed a stolen firearm report under the incident number: 20230916-1010-01.

 

He is charged with the following in connection to this incident:

 

  • Assault with a Deadly Weapon Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury
  • Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon
  • Robbery with a Dangerous Object
  • Assault on a Government Official
  • Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • Possession of a Stolen Firearm

 

Mr. Montgomery remains in the Mecklenburg County Jail under a $510,000 secured bond.
