Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, September 11, 2023) – Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team responded to a standoff situation with an armed suspect wanted on multiple warrants.
Shortly after 10 a.m., on Monday, September 11, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located an armed suspect with warrants out for his arrest, including a warrant for Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, at the intersection of Albemarle Road and E. WT Harris Boulevard. The suspect refused to follow commands of officers to drop his firearm and positioned himself against the wall of a business. Officers attempted to deescalate the suspect while calling for the SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiators and K-9 Unit to assist. Officers continued to engage in dialogue with the suspect for seven hours.
Preliminary information indicates that shortly before 5:30 p.m., the suspect sat down his firearm. SWAT Team officers deployed distraction devices to divert the attention of the suspect. The suspect quickly regained possession of his firearm.
The suspect suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before officers got to him and was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. No officers fired their service weapons.
The suspect eventually succumbed to his injury. His family was on scene to assist in the de-escalation efforts and have since been notified of his death.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office. For additional information about this case, please refer to the report: 20230911-1005-04.
