Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Providence Division

 

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, July 25, 2024) – On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Missing Persons Unit in coordination with the CMPD’s Homicide Unit located Mr. Fred Dunlap, 79, deceased in the 1000 block of Bobby Lane from an apparent trauma.

 

Detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.

 

As a result of the continued investigation, detectives identified Desmond Elijah Dunlap, 21, as a suspect in this case and obtained warrants for his arrest.

 

During the morning hours of Thursday, July 25, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT), with the assistance of FBI Charlotte located and arrested Mr. Desmond Dunlap without incident.  Mr. Dunlap was then transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown (601 E. Trade St.) to speak to detectives.  At the conclusion of the interview, he was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:

 

  • Murder
  • Financial Transaction Card Theft
  • Obtaining Property by False Pretense

 

Mr. Fred Dunlap’s next of kin has been notified of his death and the suspect’s arrest.

Public's Assistance Requested in Missing Person Investigation

 

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, July 23, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Missing Person Unit are requesting the public’s assistance in locating 79-year-old Fred Willie Dunlap.

Mr. Dunlap was last seen at his residence on Friday, July 19, 2024. Mr. Dunlap has several medical conditions that require medications that he does not have with him and family members are concerned for his well-being. They are seeking information on his whereabouts. A Missing & Endangered Alert has been issued for Mr. Dunlap.

Anyone with information on Dunlap’s whereabouts is asked to call 9-1-1 immediately.
