Case Update: Officer-Involved Shooting in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, October 10, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have obtained additional warrants against the suspect in this case.
Mr. Marcus Shankle will be charged with the following:
- Possession of a Firearm by Felon (2 Counts)
- Resisting Public Officer
- Assault on Law Enforcement Officer with a Firearm (4 counts)
- Carrying Concealed Gun Felony
- Possession of Stolen Firearm
The CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is also conducting a separate but parallel investigation.

Case Update: Officer-Involved Shooting in the North Tryon Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, October 9, 2024) – The suspect in this case has been identified as Marcus Shankle, 34. Mr. Shankle is currently hospitalized. Detectives have obtained a Firearm by Felon warrant in this case. Additional charges are under investigation for this incident.
Officer Justin Blum has been identified as the officer who discharged his service weapon in this incident. Officer Blum was hired on October 26, 2015. He is assigned to the North Tryon Division. As is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting investigation, Officer Blum has been placed on paid administrative leave.
The CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is also conducting a separate but parallel investigation.

Officer-Involved Shooting in the North Tryon Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, October 3, 2024) – The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting a CMPD officer-involved shooting investigation in the 1300 block of W. Sugar Creek Rd. in the North Tryon Division.
On Thursday, October 3, 2024, shortly before 6:30 p.m., North Tryon Division Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) was conducting patrols in the high crime area of the 1300 block of W. Sugar Creek Rd. Preliminary information indicates the officers saw the suspect in possession of a firearm and know him to be a convicted felon. North Tryon Division CRU initiated contact with the known violent felon after observing him with a firearm prior to making contact.
Upon making contact with the suspect, a brief struggle ensued. Officers perceived an imminent deadly threat and one officer discharged their firearm striking the suspect. The suspect was in possession of two firearms; both were recovered on scene. The suspect was transported by MEDIC with life-threatening injuries.
All officers on scene were unharmed.
The suspect has an extensive violent criminal history including attempted murder and murder.
The SBI is the lead investigative body. The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation as is standard protocol.
As is standard procedure with any officer involved shooting, the Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation.
Representatives from CMPD's Operations Command, Homicide Unit, Charlotte Fire Department, MEDIC, Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office and Peer Support also assisted.
