Fatal Crash Investigation in the Independence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, May 28, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Unit are investigating a fatal crash in the Independence Division.
On Friday, May 26, 2023 at approximately 9:38 p.m, officers responded to the 8500 block of E Independence Blvd. in reference to a motor vehicle crash call for service. Upon arrival, Independence Division Officers located the victim, Kristine Ann Sikorski (7/13/1979) lying in the roadway. Ms. Sikorski was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic. The vehicle that struck Ms. Sikorski remained on scene.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motorcycle Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed that Ms. Sikorski was walking west bound in the east bound lanes of E Independence Blvd. Ms. Sikorski was in the lanes of travel and was wearing dark colored clothing. Ms. Sikorski was not in a marked crosswalk. Ms. Sikorski was struck by a 2017 Dodge Caravan driven by James Lamar Yarbrough. Mr. Yarbrough remained on scene.
The driver of the Dodge was screened for impairment and was found to not be impaired at the time of the crash. Impairment for the pedestrian is unknown at this time.
Next of kin has been notified of Ms. Sikorski’s death.
