Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Independence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, April 16, 2025) – As a result of this continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) have identified Jamykel Blackmon, 19, as a suspect in this case and obtained warrants for his arrest.
On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, with the assistance of CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) and the CMPD SWAT Team, Blackmon was located and arrested without incident.
Blackmon was transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) where he was interview by homicide detectives.
At the conclusion of this interview, Blackmon was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Blackmon is charged with Murder.
Mr. Cunningham’s next of kin has been notified of this case update.

Mr. Cunningham’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, April 10, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 7100 block of Wallace Road in the Independence Division.
On Thursday, April 10, shortly after 12 p.m., officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service in the 7100 block of Wallace Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with a gunshot wound. MEDIC pronounced the victim deceased on the scene.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, CFD and MEDIC also assisted.
