Hit-And-Run Investigation in the Providence Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, January 26, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a hit-and-run crash with injury in the Providence Division.
On Sunday, January 26, 2025, around 5:23 a.m., officers responded to assist Providence Division officers on Independence Blvd. One police SUV was struck and two CMPD officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. MEDIC transported both officers to Atrium Main Hospital.
The Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to conduct their investigation. CFD also responded to assist.
The preliminary investigation indicates that several officers were blocking E. Independence Blvd. near Bojangles Coliseum due to a burst water pipe. Police vehicles had their blue lights activated and were diverting traffic off E. Independence Blvd. A 2015 Honda Civic then struck the rear of a marked CMPD vehicle. One officer was inside the police SUV and one officer was standing next to that SUV when they were struck. The Honda became disabled from the crash. Two of its four occupants fled from the scene on foot. Officers located one of these subjects shortly afterwards and detained him. The second subject who ran from the scene is still outstanding.
As a result of the continued investigation, detectives identified the driver of the Honda as Aaron Sipf, 32. Sipf was arrested and transported into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Sipf is charged with Felony Hit-And-Run and Resisting an Officer.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor at this time.
This is an ongoing, active investigation. As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs. Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information concerning the crash, should contact Detective Mercedes at (704) 432-2169 Extension 5 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
