Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, July 5, 2024) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) coordinated a successful strategic operations plan to ensure the safety of Uptown visitors during the 4th of July public fireworks display. Enforcement actions included twelve arrests: two adults and ten juveniles. There were no major incidents during the scheduled holiday festivities in Uptown. Officers seized one firearm, one magazine of ammunition, more than 12 pounds of marijuana and three boxes of fireworks.

In preparation for the 4th of July, CMPD officers conducted home visits through the Juvenile Apprehension and Diversion Empowerment (JADE) Unit with prior juvenile offenders to discourage criminal behavior.

Partnerships with the Charlotte Fire Department, MEDIC, CATS, CDOT and Mecklenburg County Emergency Management were critical in the operation’s success. Event operations were coordinated from the CMPD command center. The command center was operational from 6 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 4.

The adult suspects who were arrested have been identified as Kendric Patton, 18 and Maurice Brown, 27. Mr. Patton is charged with Resist/Delay/Obstruct and Simple Drug Possession. Mr. Brown had an order out for his arrest and was additionally charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Resist/Delay/Obstruct and Possession of Pyrotechnics.

The ten juveniles who were arrested ranged in age from 13 – 17-years-old. Their charges include Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Affray, Possession of Pyrotechnics, Possession of Marijuana and Resist/Delay/Obstruct. Out of 32 home visits conducted by the JADE Unit, only one juvenile re-offended during the 4th of July celebrations.

The CMPD would like to thank its public safety partners for collaborating in this year’s successful operation.
