Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Steele Creek Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, March 27, 2024) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit have identified a suspect in connection to the murder of Mr. Shemar Dealvin Hayes.
During the afternoon hours of Wednesday, March 27, 2024, the CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located the suspect, Tyzavian Smith, 18, within his residence. With the assistance of the CMPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) , the suspect was arrested after a short standoff. The suspect was then transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown (601 E. Trade St.) to be interviewed by detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, he was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:
- Murder
- Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon
The victim’s next of kin has been notified of the arrest.

Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Steele Creek Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, March 12, 2024) – The victim in this case has been identified as 23-year-old Shemar Dealvin Hayes. Mr. Hayes’ next of kin has been notified of his death.
CMPD’s Homicide Unit is requesting the public’s assistance. Detectives are requesting anyone with doorbell camera footage or any other video surveillance at or near the crime scene to contact 704-432-TIPS and ask to speak with Detective Akers. The Homicide Unit is specifically canvassing the Grier Fork neighborhood and the area of Red Hickory Lane, Rice Planters Road and Broad Oak Drive during the timeframe of 11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Any anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/. Information leading to an arrest may result in a cash reward up to $5,000.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, March 12, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 11600 block of Red Hickory Lane in the Steele Creek Division.
On Tuesday, March 12, 2024, shortly after 12:00 p.m., Steele Creek Division officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service in the 11600 block of Red Hickory Lane. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. MEDIC responded and pronounced the victim deceased on scene.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives of CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, MEDIC and the Charlotte Fire Department also assisted.
