Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the South Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, July 17, 2024) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Homicide Unit have identified and charged a suspect in connection to the murder of Mr. Derrick Byas.
On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) with the assistance of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office (S.C.) located and arrested Eric Watson, 41, in South Carolina. Mr. Watson has been charged with Murder and Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.
Mr. Byas’ next of kin has been notified of the arrest.

Homicide Investigation in the South Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, July 8, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 7300 block of Rea Road in the South Division.
On Monday, July 8, shortly before 5:30 a.m., officers responded to a vehicle disabled call for service in the 7300 block of Rea Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with a gunshot wound. MEDIC pronounced the victim deceased on the scene.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services and CFD also assisted.
