Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, November 14, 2023) – The deceased victim in this case has been identified as Keia Javon Garnett (DOB: 02/22/1989). Ms. Garnett’s next of kin has been notified of her death.
Due to the quick response of North Tryon Division officers and assistance from community members, the suspect, Shikeem Sands (DOB: 05/17/2000), was located near the incident location shortly after the incident occurred. Mr. Sands was taken into custody and transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown (601 E. Trade St.) to speak with homicide detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Mr. Sands was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:
- Murder (1st Degree)
- Attempted 1st Degree Murder
- Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Vehicle
- Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon
Ms. Garnett’s next of kin has been notified of the arrest.

Homicide Investigation in the North Tryon Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, November 13, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation near the 1100 block of West Sugar Creek Road in the North Tryon Division.
On Monday, November 13, 2023, shortly before 5:00 p.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to an ADW with Injury call for service in the 1100 block of West Sugar Creek Road . Upon arrival, officers located two victims with apparent gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported by MEDIC to a local hospital where one victim was pronounced deceased. The other victim has non-life threatening injuries.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, Medic and the Charlotte Fire Department also assisted.
