Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, October 22, 2024) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Homicide Unit have identified and charged a second suspect in connection to the murder of Mr. Derrick Answon Baker.
On Thursday, October 17, 2024, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located and arrested Jamotis Watkins, 18, without incident. Mr. Watkins was then transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown (601 E. Trade Street) to speak with detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Mr. Watkins was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:
- Murder
- Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill/Inflict Serious Injury (2 counts)
- Attempted Murder (2 counts)
Mr. Baker’s next of kin has been notified of the arrest.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, October 8, 2024) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte Mecklenburg-Police Department’s (CMPD) Homicide Unit have identified and charged a 17-year-old juvenile as a suspect in this case and obtained warrants for their arrest.
During the afternoon hours of Friday, October 4, 2024, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located and arrested the 17-year-old juvenile suspect without incident. The juvenile was then transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown (601 E. Trade St.) At the conclusion of the interview, the juvenile was transferred into the custody of the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
The victims’ next of kin have been notified of the arrest.

Homicide Investigation in the North Tryon Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, October 4, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 100 block of Tom Hunter Rd. in the North Tryon Division.
On Thursday, October 3, 2024, shortly before 10:00 p.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon with injury call for service in the 100 block of Tom Hunter Rd. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. MEDIC pronounced the victim deceased on scene.
Shortly after, officers received an assault with a deadly weapon with injury call for service in the 6700 block of N. Tryon St. where they located a second victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The juvenile victim was transported by MEDIC with life-threatening injuries.
Just before 11:30 p.m., a third victim arrived at a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Detectives are working to determine the relationship between the three victims.
Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from the CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also assisted.
