Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Freedom Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, November 6, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit continue to investigate the death of Tony Ray Smith, 58 from March of 2024.

 

On Nov. 5, detectives with the CMPD homicide unit traveled to Jonesborough, Tennessee and interviewed a suspect in the Freedom Division case. After the interview, the suspect, Henry Fernando Centeno Renteria, 45 was placed into custody by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO).

 

Renteria was charged with Being a Fugitive from Justice by WCSO and will be charged with murder pending extradition to North Carolina.

Homicide Investigation in the Freedom Division

 

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, March 16, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 3800 block of Brookshire Boulevard in the Freedom Division.

 

On Saturday, March 16, 2024, shortly after 3:30 a.m., officers in the Freedom Division responded to an accident with personal injury call for service in the 3800 block of Brookshire Boulevard. Upon arrival, they discovered an adult male victim with life-threatening injuries from an apparent hit-and-run. The victim was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The initial investigation revealed that the victim was intentionally struck.

 

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives of CMPD’s Major Crash Unit, Operations Command, Victim Services, MEDIC and the Charlotte Fire Department also assisted.
