Published on August 28, 2024

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, August 28, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a felony hit and run crash involving a vehicle versus a pedestrian in the Steele Creek Division.

On Tuesday August 27, 2024, at approximately 10:21 p.m., Steele Creek Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries involving a pedestrian struck in the parking lot of 7701 Sharon Lakes Road. When officers arrived on scene, they located a seriously injured pedestrian (Luis Alfredo Lopez-Garcia) in the middle of the parking lot. Lopez-Garcia had been struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Medic arrived on scene and transported Lopez-Garcia to Atrium Health Main with life-threatening injuries. Officers were able to identify the suspect vehicle as a white 2010 Ford F150 pickup. They located that vehicle nearby on Waterford Lakes Drive. Officers were also able to identify the driver of the Ford as Baudilio Lopez Perez. He had fled Waterford Lakes on foot in an unknown direction and could not be located.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, members of the DWI Task Force, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates Perez was driving the Ford south through the parking lot of 7701 Sharon Lakes Road when he struck Lopez-Garcia, who was lying on the pavement. Perez did not stop to render aid, did not contact the police, and fled the scene before abandoning the Ford and fleeing the area on foot.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Perez for Felony Hit and Run.

On Wednesday, August 28, Perez was arrested and transported to the LEC where an interview was conducted. At the conclusion of the interview, Perez was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
