Fatal Vehicle Crash Investigation in the Metro Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, October 31, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle collision in the Metro Division.

On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at approximately 8:13 a.m., Metro Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries involving two vehicles near the 3200 block of Freedom Dr. When officers arrived on scene, they located a 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage with extensive damage that was occupied by a driver (Gregory Matthew Thompson, 67) and front seat passenger (Connie Lee Yates, 70). Officers also located a 2010 Dodge Challenger occupied by a driver (Tajarvis Deonte Wall, 34) and a juvenile female. MEDIC pronounced Mr. Thompson and Mrs. Yates deceased on scene. Mr. Wall and the juvenile passenger were transported to Atrium Health Main with non-life-threatening injuries. The occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seatbelts.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. The preliminary investigation indicated Mr. Wall was driving southeast on Freedom Drive. when he collided with Mr. Thompson’s vehicle as it was making a U-turn near the 3200 block of Freedom Drive. 

Mr. Wall was screened for impairment and found not to be impaired.

The excessive speed of the Dodge was a contributing factor in this collision.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor for Mr. Thompson. Toxicology results are pending.

Once Mr. Wall was released from the hospital, he was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with:

  • Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle X2
  • No Operators License
  • Improper Use of Lane
  • Child Safety Seat Violations
  • Speeding
  • Window Tint Violation

Next of kin has been notified for both decedents.
