Fatal Pedestrian Crash in the Metro Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, July 15, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a single vehicle and a pedestrian in the Metro Division.

On Sunday, July 14, 2024, at approximately 4:49 p.m., Metro Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injury involving a 2021 Jeep Compass and a pedestrian near the 3500 block of Statesville Ave. When officers arrived on scene, they located an injured pedestrian Michael Kenneth Sampson, 67, lying in the roadway the and the silver Compass in the right lane with damage to the front right corner and top of the hood. Ashlee Renee Friday, 32, was the only occupant. MEDIC transported Mr. Sampson to Atrium Health Main, where he was pronounced deceased. Friday was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search, responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates Friday was driving south on Statesville Ave. when she struck Sampson as he was attempting to cross the 3500 block of Statesville Ave. outside of any pedestrian crosswalk.

Friday was screened for impairment on scene and determined not to be impaired.

Sampson’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
