Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigation in the University City Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, June 28, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are conducting a fatal crash investigation involving a pedestrian death in the University City Division.

 

On Friday, June 28, 2024, at approximately 12:50 a.m., University City Division officers responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by an Amtrak train in the 8100 block of Old Concord Road.  Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive pedestrian on the west side of the westernmost track with serious injuries.  The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene.  Medic pronounced the pedestrian, Jerome Lydell Nelson, 43, deceased on scene.

 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, the Medical Examiner’s Office and members of the Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation and collect physical evidence.  Representatives from Amtrak and Norfolk Southern Railway also responded to the scene.   The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Nelson was sitting on the westernmost train track when he was struck by an Amtrak train traveling southbound on the track.

 

Toxicology results are pending.

 

Mr. Nelson’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
