Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigation in the University City Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, November 6, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian that occurred in the University City Division.

 

On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at approximately 5:36 a.m., University Division officers responded to an accident with personal injury call for service near the 7600 block of University City Blvd.  When officers arrived on scene, they located an unresponsive pedestrian (Korean Latavia Jones, 47) laying in the middle of University City Boulevard. Officers also located a silver 2017 Hyundai Elantra with a single occupant (Marks Lee Long Jr.,65) on the shoulder of University City Boulevard and a white 2003 Mercedes Benz sedan that had been driven by Ms. Jones.

Mr. Long Jr. was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. Ms. Jones was pronounced deceased on scene by MEDIC at 5:42 a.m.

 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation.  The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Long Jr. was driving southbound on University City Blvd. when he struck Ms. Jones who was in the travel lane attempting to retrieve and item that had fallen off her vehicle.

 

Mr. Long Jr. was screened for impairment on scene and was determined to not be impaired.

 

Speed and impairment are not suspected to be contributing factors for this crash.

 

Ms. Jones’s next of kin has been notified of her death.
