Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigation in the Hickory Grove Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, April 25, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in the Hickory Grove Division.
On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Hickory Grove Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injury in the 9500 block of Parkton Road. Upon arrival, officers located an injured pedestrian on the roadside and a 2009 BMW 328 I with damage. The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic also responded to the scene. Medic transported the pedestrian, Justin Travis Scott, 38, to Novant Health with life threatening injuries.
Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Scott was walking along the side of Parkton Road when he was struck by the BMW driven by Avery Damaris Shelton, 24. The BMW was traveling recklessly and above the posted speed limit.
On Sunday, February 25, 2024, at approximately 2:25 p.m., Mr. Scott was pronounced deceased due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Following the death of Mr. Scott, the incident was assigned to the CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit. As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit obtained arrest warrants against Mr. Shelton.
On Monday, April 22, 2024, Mr. Shelton was located and arrested. He was transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail and transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:
- Involuntary Manslaughter
- Reckless Driving
- Driving While License Revoked
- No Liability Insurance
- Failure to Register Vehicle
Mr. Scott’s next of kin has been notified of the arrest.
