Fatal Motorcycle Crash Investigation in the Hickory Grove Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, October 14, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle in the Hickory Grove Division.

On Friday, October 11, 2024, shortly before 7:30 p.m.., Hickory Grove Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injury involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck in the 8000 block of Lawyers Road. Upon arrival, officers located a 2024 Dodge Ram 2500 big Horn pickup truck with extensive damage to the front-end and a 2007 Honda Shadow VT750 partially under the pickup truck.  The operator of the motorcycle was also located unresponsive with life-threatening injuries. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene.  MEDIC pronounced the motorcyclist, Thomas Kardos, III, 46, deceased on scene.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Street Racing Task Force responded to the scene to conduct their investigation and members of Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. The preliminary investigation indicates the motorcyclist was traveling northwest on Lawyers Road above the posted speed limit when it struck the pickup truck as it was attempting to make a left turn onto Harri Ann Drive.  The driver of the pickup, Mr. Angel Sanchez Medina, 28, was not injured and remained on scene.

Toxicology results are pending for Mr. Kardos.

Mr. Kardos’ next of kin has been notified of his death.
