Fatal Hit-And-Run Investigation in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, December 10, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a hit-and-run in the Eastway Division.

On Monday, December 9, 2024, at 2:15 a.m., Eastway Division officers responded to a hit and run with injuries in the 1000 block of North Caldwell Street.  Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive pedestrian, Wanda Rena Sheppard, 53, lying on the roadway with life-threatening injuries. Officers spoke to witnesses on the scene who stated a dark colored vehicle struck Ms. Sheppard before fleeing the scene of the collision. 

MEDIC transported Ms. Sheppard to Novant Health Presbyterian where she was pronounced deceased. Members from Charlotte Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Ms. Sheppard was attempting to cross the 1000 block of North Caldwell Street. Ms. Sheppard was then struck by the vehicle that was driving southbound. The vehicle was last seen driving towards East 12th Street.
