Fatal Crash Investigation in the Westover Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, November 11, 2024) –Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Westover Division. 

On Sunday, November 10, 2024, at approximately 1:16 a.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the 6600 block of South Boulevard. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene. 

Upon arrival, officers located a Toyota Scion in the roadway fully engulfed in flames. Two juvenile passengers were located outside the Toyota with injuries. The juvenile passengers were transported by MEDIC to Atrium Health Main. 

The driver of the Toyota, Celeo Avalid Chirino, 20, was pronounced deceased on scene. Mr. Chirino’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and DWI Task Force responded to the scene and hospital to conduct their investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene to collect physical evidence. 

The preliminary investigation indicates the Toyota was traveling south on South Boulevard when it failed to maintain its lane striking a raised median causing extensive damage to the undercarriage of the vehicle. Once the Toyota came to rest it became engulfed in flames.   

Excessive speed and alcohol impairment are suspected to be contributing factors. All occupants of the Toyota were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
