Fatal Crash Investigation in the University City Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, Oct. 23, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the University City Division.

On Tuesday, Oct. 21, at approximately 9:11 p.m., officers responded to a vehicle crash with injuries involving a pedestrian in the 2200 block of Harris Houston Road. Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian, Dale Lee Byrd, 66, in the roadway with life-threatening injuries and a Hyundai Santa Fe with damage to the bottom of the vehicle. MEDIC arrived and pronounced Mr. Byrd deceased on scene. The Charlotte Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, Motor Unit and DWI Task Force responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. 

The preliminary investigation indicates the Hyundai was traveling east on Harris Houston Rd. when the pedestrian was struck as he was lying in the roadway. The driver of the Hyundai was not injured.

Toxicology results are pending for Mr. Byrd.

Mr. Byrd’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Division.
