Fatal Crash Investigation in the University City Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, January 16, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the University City Division.
On Saturday, January 13th, 2024, at approximately 11:20 p.m., officers from the University City Division responded to a single vehicle collision on University City Blvd. near the intersection of Harris Houston Rd. When officers arrived, they located an unresponsive female, identified as Skilar Lorraine Akers (DOB: 07/02/2005), inside of a vehicle that struck a guardrail on University City Blvd. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded to the scene. MEDIC pronounced the victim deceased on scene.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers with the DWI Task Force and the Crime Scene Search Unit responded to the scene to investigate the incident. The preliminary investigation indicates that Ms. Akers was traveling east on University City Blvd. at a high rate of speed when she lost control of her vehicle, causing the vehicle to strike a metal guardrail.
Speed is a factor for this vehicle collision. Impairment is currently unknown and is pending the toxicology report. Ms. Akers was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Ms. Akers’ next of kin has been notified of her death.
