Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, August 28, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle in the University City Division.
On Sunday, August 27, 2023, at approximately 5:54 p.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash call for service in the 11570 block of North Tryon Street. Upon arrival, officers located a 2017 Kia Sorento and a Kawasaki Ninja ZX636 in the roadway. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC arrived on scene and pronounced the rider of the Kawasaki, Adrian Lee Taylor Avery (DOB: 12/8/1997), deceased due to injuries sustained in the collision.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motor Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed that the Kawasaki was traveling north on North Tryon Street above the posted speed limit when the Kia Sorento turned left in the path of the motorcycle. The motorcycle collided with the Kia and Mr. Avery was thrown from the bike.
The driver of the Kia, Holley Lynne Porter, was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Ms. Porter was screened for impairment and found not to be impaired.
Speed appears to be a factor in this collision. It is unknown if impairment is a factor for the rider of the motorcycle. Toxicology results are pending.
Mr. Avery’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
