Fatal Crash Investigation in the Steele Creek Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, December 27, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Steele Creek Division.
On Tuesday, December 5th, 2023, at approximately 9:14 a.m., Steele Creek Division officers responded to the 2200 block of Contemporary Place in reference to a vehicle vs pedestrian collision. Upon arrival, officers located the pedestrian Rontrey Digsby (DOB 06/07/1986) who was operating a motorized wheelchair. MEDIC was called to the scene and transported Mr. Digsby to Atrium Health Main where he was treated and released.
On December 18, 2023, Mr. Digsby requested MEDIC due to complications from injuries he sustained in the crash on December 5th. MEDIC transported Mr. Digsby to Atrium Health Main where he was later pronounced deceased. On Tuesday, December 19, 2023, detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit were notified of Mr. Digsby’s death and immediately began an investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates that on December 5, 2023, Mr. Digsby was traveling in his motorized wheelchair through the parking lot of The Addison at South Tryon apartment complex in the 2200 block of Contemporary place when he was struck by a 2008 Toyota Camry operated by Christian Esteban Gomez Rodriguez (DOB 01/15/1980). Speed and impairment are not believed to be factors in this collision, but toxicology reports are pending. Mr. Digsby’s next of kin was notified of his death.
