Fatal Crash Investigation in the South Division - Rea Rd

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, January 23, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the South Division.
On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at approximately 7:07 a.m., South Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the intersection of Rea Road and Southbrook Drive. The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic also responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers located a Toyota Camry with damage to the driver’s side and an Audio Q5 with front-end damage. Medic pronounced the driver of the Toyota, Robert James Freedman (DOB: 10/19/1928), deceased on scene. The driver of the Audi, Tina Louise Malcheksy (DOB: 04/10/1968), was transported to Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center for treatment.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit along with Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates the Toyota was traveling west on Southbrook Drive when the driver failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by the Audi traveling north on Rea Road. The drivers of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Impairment is not believed to be a factor in this collision.
Mr. Freedman’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
