Fatal Crash Investigation in the Providence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, September 9, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Providence Division.

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, at approximately 11:47 a.m., Providence Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries involving two vehicles in the 4000 block of Sharon View Road.  The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers located a 2013 BMW X3 and 2019 GMC Acadia, both with heavy front-end damage in the roadway.  The drivers and passengers of both vehicles were transported to Atrium Health Main.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. 

The preliminary investigation indicates the BMW X3 was travelling east on Sharon View Road when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with the GMC Acadia.  The driver of the BMW, Allison Layson, 50, sustained serious injuries. A passenger of the BMW, Emery Catherine Layson, 11, was transported to Atrium Health Main where she was pronounced deceased. A second juvenile passenger in the BMW sustained non-life-threatening injuries.  The driver of the GMC Acadia, Brie Gorchov, 48, and her juvenile passenger both sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Excessive speed nor impairment are believed to be factors in this crash.

Emery Layson’s next of kin has been notified of her death.
