Case Update: Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, September 13, 2023) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit have charged a driver in connection to this case.

 

On Wednesday, September 13, detectives charged Angelia Figueroa (DOB: 09/03/1988), the driver of the Honda involved in this crash.  Ms. Figueroa failed to stop at the posted stop sign before entering traffic and into the path of the motorcycle.  She has been charged with the following:

 

  • Failing to Stop at a Stop Sign
  • Death by Motor Vehicle (Misdemeanor)

 

Mr. Pena’s next of kin has been notified of the charges.

Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Tryon Division

 

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, September 12, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle in the North Tryon Division.

 

On Monday, September 11, 2023, at approximately 9:54 a.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the 600 block of Eastway Drive.  Upon arrival, officers located a 2023 Honda Accord with heavy driver’s side damage and a 2009 Suzuki GSX-R badly damaged in the roadway. MEDIC responded to the scene and pronounced the operator of the motorcycle, Jorge Jafeth Pena (DOB: 03/01/2000), deceased on scene.

 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, CMPD Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation.  The preliminary investigation indicates the motorcycle was traveling north on Eastway Drive at a high rate of speed when it struck the driver’s side of the Honda as it turned onto Eastway Drive.  Mr. Pena was ejected from the motorcycle. The driver of the Honda, Angelia Figueroa (DOB: 09/03/1988), was uninjured and remained on scene.

 

Excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in this crash.  Toxicology results are pending to determine if impairment is also a contributing factor.

 

Mr. Pena’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
